Eros (also known as Cupid), the god of love and lust, is a mischievous little boy with a bow and arrow in his hand. Once, he was ridiculed by the God of the sun Apollo that the bow and arrow in his hand was only a child’s thing. He was so mad and decided to give Apollo a lesson with the bow and arrow in his hand. He shot Apollo with the gold arrow, instilling in the god a passionate love for the river nymph Daphne. He shot Daphne with the lead arrow, instilling in her a hatred for Apollo. Daphne kept rejecting Apollo and begged her father, the river god, to help her get rid of Apollo. The river god turned Daphne into a laurel tree. Since then, the laurel has become the sacred tree of Apollo, and its branches and leaves have also been made into “laurel wreath” to reward outstanding performers in the arena or in the literary world. Ancient Greek priests also used laurel oil to obtain oracles.
