“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the key to everything.” – Wolfgang Goethe.
At the hearth of Mediterranean, crossroads of civilizations, Sicily has one of the richest and most intricate histories. It has been colonized many times over the last couple of thousand years, from ancient Greek settlements to Roman conquests, Arab influences to Norman kingdoms. Each civilization has left an indelible mark, creating a rich, complex cultural landscape.
Mount Etna’s volcanic terrain, pristine Mediterranean coastlines, rolling hills and fertile valleys: as if its astounding history wasn’t enough, Sicily offers remarkable environmental diversification. The Romans had already noticed it when they made Sicily the main source of food of the empire.
But what truly sets Sicily apart is its tremendous environmental biodiversity. An element, if we want, of less prominence in the popular outlook. These unique sets of circumstances make possible for Sicily to exhibit the highest number of small farms and micro-enterprises in the EU and perhaps in the world. Direct consequences are the preservation of family ties and strong retention of traditions.
Thanks to its cultural diversity, over the centuries, Sicily has also developed one of the riches and most refined cuisine, representing the foundation of all cultural activities in the island. The flavors are vibrant and varied, showcasing local ingredients that are lovingly prepared by families who take pride in their culinary heritage.
From its stunning landscapes to its warm-hearted people, every corner offers a new adventure waiting to be explored.
