Avocado in Spanish means strong and hardy. Rumor says that it was a twenty-one-year-old American explorer Carl Schmidt traveled to southern Mexico in 1911 in search of quality avocados. He cut budwood from nearly thirty varieties of avocado trees from Atlixco, Mexico, numbered them and shipped them back to Altadena. Most of the buds refused adaptation to the soil and climate, but “No. 15” flourished, producing fruit of exceptional quality. That variety is known today as the Fuerte avocado.
