《我的故事11》

上回我成間屋都掃勻, 真係將果園farmhouse inside-out 咁係睇過下, 今日我就講下day-off做啲乜。

一般day-off, 都會去周邊城鎮玩下咁。不過, 我就去咗Guido 鄰居嘅果園幫手😆

天呀!原來我係工作狂, 從來都唔發覺呢件事添!🤣🤣

講番day-off嘅工作😆
鄰居叫Carmelo, 識講英文, 原來佢係美軍基地做消防員。亦同好多同年人(50+)一樣承繼咗阿爸幅地、係工餘時打理打理。

我就去幫手執頭執尾
一出發, 去咗bar食早餐、再到果園工作咗一陣, 有陣雨, 所以就入屋預備lunch。係, 我都覺得食嘢多過做嘢😆太辛苦啦!

佢同老婆有一仔一女, 一家人無人有興趣幫手打理果園, 所以佢孤軍作戰😅
呢個亦係當今農業困境, 青黃不接。
佢話賣檸檬又辛苦、又賺唔到錢, 好多果園都面臨荒廢🤦
但佢呢輩人對土地有好強烈嘅情感, 好多都有工餘打理田園嘅興趣、習慣。
佢亦有唔同嘅品種, 但係種黎玩多個賣, 所以Guido 都有嘗試幫手賣, 唔想浪費佢打理嘅一番心機。

不過, 佢哋嘅下一代就無呢種熱情, 一般都北上打工, 工作機會多啲。好似佢個仔就係米蘭附近當差, 新抱就教書, 連新抱娘家都搬埋去做打工。

又真係幾難想像呢輩有穩定工作, 又成家立室咗嘅北移一族回流西西里打理果園🤔

講講下, 雨落大咗!果園工作作罷!(都話係食野傾計多過做野㗎啦😆😆)

呢個年紀、除咗英文老師, 係西西里識英文嘅唔多, 有個can speak English嘅鄰居真係好彩。
真係day-off 工作都好好玩呀!😆

《我的故事10》

係果園, 除咗落田, 仲有幫手家務。
Guido 阿媽當然就係執屋掌門人啦!

我地一路打掃,一路傾計。
🧑Guido 阿媽,🙋‍♀️我

🙋‍♀️「This is like a dream house. 我將來都想起間自己既屋呀!」
🧑「起屋唔係咁浪漫架,仲好辛苦!我地係起屋之前搞左5-6年先動工!開始起就一搞搞左成年多先有4幅牆、屋頂,之後仲有基本水電裝修,搞到一頭煙!。之後既細節都係慢慢係過去嘅廿幾年來不停增加,好似其中一個廁所就一路拖,拖到而家都未搞掂,仲有個 Verdana 要加玻璃趟門 ,我諗起都頭暈。」

起一間屋最浪漫嘅部分就喺計劃階段已經完成咗😆
就好似有人話
「愛情最浪漫嘅部分就係暗戀或者曖昧嘅階段 」
🤦😆🤣
我諗我都應該係諗下㗎啫, 唔好太認真吧!
雖然同阿媽傾偈, 大部份時間都係估緊對方講咩野,但佢真係好有耐性, 又或者佢真係好鍾意講野😆😆😆

就係咁, 左掃右掃, 我成間大屋已經去勻哂😆

《我的故事9》

上回講到最重要係泥土。

我哋嘅果園係活火山東邊, 距離17公里左右。年中都會有好幾次會受到火山灰嘅眷顧, 令泥土結構變得有利小生物嘅生存繁殖, 變相為果園嘅肥沃度出力!

好大程度上, 我哋果園係唔駛施肥, let time do the work.

咁問題中女又黎嘞😆

🙋‍♀️「Farms near Mount Etna needs no fertilizer, right?」(有個活火山, 咁呢度唔駛施肥啦?)
🧒「um, no, most of them need a lot since the way people were treating the land was depleting the life of soil.」(好多都要㗎!佢哋都無善待土地)
🙋‍♀️「what do you mean?」(吓?)
🧒「For the last decades, it was in fashion to spray the land with roundup like of pesticides for weed management. Over time, the lifes are rid completely. The land is practically sterile. Volcanic sand is a habitat favours microorganisms, not giving directly nutrients, so pumping chemical nutrients has become the main practice. 」(佢哋落落埋埋嘅殺蟲除草劑, 有用嘅微生物都無咁滯啦!)
🙋‍♀️「how about your farm?」(咁個farm 呢?)
🧒 「Our farm doesn’t need much because for the last decades to manage weed
❎We don’t use pesticides
❎We don’t plough the land
☑️We trim and drop the weed at the Spot to provide mulching (ground cover)
So the underground world of lifes is undisturbed and do their job.」(我哋唔噴嘢、唔翻土, 用最labour-intensive嘅方法剪草, 啲草做埋mulch, 唔打擾地下生態)

🙋‍♀️「Ah, you are cultivating soil, not only the trees!」(原來你唔只係種樹、仲係養地, sou desu ne日文😆)

原來唔係火山區就唔駛施肥
你點對你嘅土地, 佢就點回應你!
Terroir/terreno 重要到即使相隔一條路, 都有好大分別。

《我的故事8》

琴日講到Guido話「搞打工換宿計劃係想畀人知道乜嘢係真正有機嘅食物」

我都好好奇喎!我都知近十幾廿年,有機認證變左 marketing ,甚至全球各地既小農都有退出呢個遊戲既舉動。但係香港買野,啲舖頭只係識講呢隻「有機架!」「好味呀!」「歐洲架!」「多人買呀!」「無污染架!」。想問多啲,答案一般都係「唔好意思,唔清楚」,「點知咁多呀!」。買本地野會好啲,會講得出邊個農場,但係香港既農業出產少,而香港既飲食文化又咁國際化,供應鏈又咁長,其實要清楚自己買緊咩都唔係咁易。所以要依賴label 都好正常。。。

咁Guido 好似有料爆咁款,我梗係豎起隻耳仔聽啦😁😁😁

🧒「The first thing is biodiversity(生物多樣性). Real organic is about mimicking nature. (真正有機就係模仿大自然)But the first thing certifying organizations tend to have missed is biodiversity. For example, when we first applied for an organic certificate, we declared 80 varieties in 1 hectare of land, they were shocked since they had never had farms with so many varieties. ( 我地申請有機認證,係1公頃地種左80幾種品種,嚇親佢地,佢地都未見過係同一個係同一個farm有咁多個品種!)According to them, usually the small farms have 5-10 varieties (細型 farms 有5-10品種)while the big farms might have 2-3 varieties. (大型 farms 就更少,得2-3品種)Bureaucratically, they were unprepared at all. The module to fill was designed to put a few varieties.」
🙋‍♀️「I had never thought of Biodiversity in the farm when I considered buying organic!( 其實我買有機野都從來冇諗過果園既生物多樣性) 😅😅」

🧒「It is not your fault. (都唔怪得你!)Now, as a consumer, you are so distant from farmers, (你地同農夫距離咁遠)you only know what the label will tell you, whatever is not required by the organization or government to be put on the label is out of question. (其實label 有咩,消費者就只係知咁多囉。)That’s why the label organic is not exactly up to standard for real organic. 」
🙋‍♀️「I always had a feeling that the label was just skin-deep organic but didn’t expect that the first thing missing was the essence of being organic. 🙈(我都知 label 唔代表咩,但無諗過原來最重要既生物多樣性欠奉!)」

🧒「Once again, organic certifying organization is never about education, it is about market standard. By the information they demand, you can understand it is more for market control than anything else. (其實佢地似收集數據做統計多過做有機認證,同教育。)」
🙋‍♀️「So, what kind of information do they ask for? (佢地問啲咩?)」

🧒「The annual inspection is Sale record, estimation of production, garden map, logbook for garden work and receipts of fertilizers or related products. (銷售量,生產量,果園地圖,果園工作記錄,肥料或相關產品收據。)」
🙋‍♀️「It sounds more like collecting statistics. But at least they care about what fertilizers you put. (係喎,至少佢地都管你落咩肥料呀!)」

🧒「Yes, meno male. (好過無)」「The most important fertilizer come from the soil.  (但係重點先係泥土!)」

《我的故事7》

上回講到「粒粒皆辛苦唔係得個講」!

午飯後 siesta (晏覺)好快就成為左習慣,除左真係咁早起所以攰,係呢度after lunch 出街都無野行,大部份舖頭都收舖 siesta,4點不露。想出街食個 gelato / granita 都得,不過可能你溶得仲快過杯 gelato 呀!

全城訓晏覺好似好奢侈但又好合理,除左避開全日最熱既幾個鐘之外,夜晚就可以夜啲訓,享受番幾個鐘既清涼。

🧒「What brings you to Sicily?(你點解黎西西里既) 」
🙋‍♀️「You! (為左你囉!)😆」

🧒「Me? Oh, really? (我?!)😅」
🙋‍♀️「In a way, yes since I was choosing between France and Italy. You were the first host accepting me. (你係第一個接待我既果園)」

🧒「Ok, but why choosing a farm? (但點解選擇果園呢?) 」
🙋‍♀️「This is complicated. (答案有啲複雜)The short answer is for an alternative way of life. (另類生活) The long answer is that producing my own food is the only way to live autonomously.(自主生活)I want to try it out to see if it is just one of the many fantasies I have or I can really live off farming. I know it is hard but so far I am enjoying it. (黎西西里耕田,想試下自己係咪得個講字!」

🙋‍♀️「How about you? 」(咁你呢?)
🧒「Me? This is my family farm, so that’s why I am here. (呢個係我屋企嘛!」

🙋‍♀️「Of course, but I know a lot of young people are choosing to work in the city, offices. But you chose to stay, why? (你無諗過走咩?)」
🧒「It is true. A lot of people are discouraging their children from farming because farming is hard and not well-paid. But I think land is important. It is a security. A security of food, a security to life. (我 覺得土地太重要,係食物既保障,都係生命既保障。)」

🙋‍♀️「I agree. (好認同)」
🧒「Actually it was the experience I had a few years ago helped me decide what I am doing today. I was also a workawayer in Ireland (我係愛爾蘭打工換宿左成年), helping out in a traditional music school and a small family for almost a year. I realised this might be the way I wanted to live off farming. So when I returned to Sicily, I started the volunteering program with my family farm, hoping to get some help and more people to know about real organic farming . ( 我返到西西里之後 ,就開始打工換宿計劃,希望有多啲義工嚟幫手,亦都畀人知道乜嘢係真正有嘅食物)」

《我的故事6》

琴日講到第一日就非常充實愉快咁完左。

第二日就清晨5點起身梳洗準備出門。炎炎夏日,天未光就醒,真係好舒服好涼爽。

兩個 apartment 有個大平台(terrazza)相連,Guido 有佢既天地,woofers/workaway 亦有我地既空間。

踏入平台,天仲係深藍色,遠處有一線橙紅,好似一個裂口,太陽好似就快從裂縫爆出。係清涼既平台伸個懶腰,就入屋食早餐,然後出發。

落到樓下,打開車房,挑選我既座騎 – 單車。一出門,已經要上斜路,喘哂氣先到教堂轉第一個彎,但進入直路之後,一路穿過矮矮平房,同田野果園,而天空亦慢慢變天藍(azzurro),感覺寫意。好快到直路盡頭,左一拐,右一轉,又再上斜。果園位於 Trepunti – Giarre 既高點,沿途斜路彎彎曲曲,盡是果園。

我出盡九牛二虎之力不停踩,但好似見唔到盡頭。呢個時候我已經滿頭大汗,太陽亦高高掛,我頓時明白點解要天未光就出發!踩到一間等待復修既破舊大屋,知道己完成一半路程,亦減速回回氣。破舊大屋周圍雜草叢生,果園亦己荒廢,但那種濃濃莊園既氣息仍然吸引,吸引到我有錢都想買。😅😅小休過後就繼續頂硬上,踩呀踩,終於到頂啦!踩多兩條街,再落斜就到達一座橙色大閘。我一生人都未試過開閘開到咁有滿足感!😌😌😌 (我身水身汁踩左半個鐘架!)😆😆😆

熱完身,穿上恤衫,戴上草帽,就開始工作。係呢段時間,果園工作主要摘黑莓、為番茄除雜草,用透光紙袋將桃一隻隻包好防蟲。聽落輕鬆簡單,但係做起黎一啲都唔易。

充滿荊棘既黑莓叢,除左有刺之外,要從中摘滿一盒真係好花時間;摘左成朝,日上三竿,都只係摘到2-3kg。

眼見番茄一排排生長於竹棚間,要踎低逐棵除草,腰力少啲都難以應付。加上要將番茄固定於竹棚,確保分株之間空氣流通,真係少啲心機耐性都唔得。

而桃既防蟲方法就真係未有所聞。除左將一枝樹枝上過多既桃除掉,仲用透光紙袋一隻隻將桃包好防蟲。要包得實,又唔可以損毀隻桃,好真係要技巧。仲要爬梯,高舉雙手先可以包到大部份既桃,拗腰、趷高腳就在所難免,。

以上項項工作都唔係粗重工夫, 唔使擔唔使抬,但係半日下來就全身散哂😪😪

粒粒皆辛苦真係唔係得個講,真係我逐粒黑莓摘、逐隻桃包,逐棵番茄照顧。好彩lunch 又 ready 啦!😌忽然之間明白一個家庭「有人主外,有人主內」好重要呀!☺️

《我的故事5》

上回講到我進入左「西西里家庭既心藏地帶 – 廚房!」

一入廚房,見到一位笑面迎人,眼神亦帶好奇既 Sicilian mamma,不難聯想係 Guido 阿媽。她不通英語,而我既意大利文亦係有限公司,但無阻她既健談好客,繼續用意大利文慢慢地跟我交談。當然Guido 變成左翻譯員,但他應該習以為常吧!當時,他成為 woofing host 亦已有一年來。

見到我努力學講意大利,Guido 阿媽亦份外熱情,開始分享佢正在預備既西西里午餐。佢指向檯上既一堆檸檬葉,問我:「hai assaggiato polpette alle foglie di limone? 」(有冇試過檸檬葉肉餅?)

我擰擰頭,Guido 阿媽開始講解呢個係西西里既食譜,Guido 見狀就插咀話,「Let’s go to the garden first before it gets too hot. 」

Guido 阿媽亦點頭示意,「Si,c’e troppo caldo ora. Vai,ci parliamo dopo. 」(係,真係好熱。我地一陣再傾。)

打左招呼,我就跟Guido 落果園。佢帶我行左一圈,介紹左十幾種樹。生於城市既我,又真係大鄉里,大部份都未見過。遊完果園,只覺得呢個唔係一般單一種植既果園,品種多樣性多到更似係植物公園 (Botanic garden),showcase 哂我想像到,同想像唔到既。

係果園快遊之後,我地停左係一棵綠葉飄飄既大樹。一粒粒紫紅色、晶瑩通透,似掛在樹上既寶石。然後我見到一行長梯依著樹幹,原來我既第一項任務係 – 摘桑果!

爬上長梯,眼望四方,尤如尋寶。以為手到拿來,但係一到手要摘下就發現手染紫紅。呢隻桑莓皮極為薄,稍一用力就會爆汁。所以要摘滿一盒250毫克,實不為易。但我仍樂此不彼,皆因漁人得利,我係樹上食過飽。一路摘一路食,不知時日,樹下忽然傳黎 「Lunch is ready!」不經不覺,原來 lunchtime 啦!

我記起「檸檬葉肉餅呀!」

《我的故事4》

上回講到「大閘一開,沿途景致又變啦」!

車慢慢駛進果園,眼前小石路,綠蔭兩傍,一路引領到桑樹下。一時間就被茂密桑樹籠罩住,一路駛過,有種穿梭隧道既感覺。不竟只有兩三秒既穿越,卻成為我永恆既記憶。

下一秒已到步。一步出車門,Guido 阿爸剛巧打理葡萄滕,眼見客人到臨,亦轉身向我迎來打招手,而佢身傍獵犬亦熱情地靠近我,甚至將我推到葡萄滕下,穿來插往。我不經意地向上一望,滿滿是葡萄葉,覺得自己置身於畫中,而且葡萄滕一路延伸,與小路平行,直至海天一色為盡頭。

嘩!呢一刻既畫面實在太令人陶醉,頓時,我好似靈魂出竅,見到自己置身於secret garden 般既葡萄園。我對果園已經一見鍾情啦。

Guido 默默站著,微微笑住,輕輕一說:「Ok, let’s go up to meet my family and settle 。」我應聲而行,走過停車既平地,爬上兩傍種滿花草既樓梯,正式踏入大屋範圍 – 屋外遊廊 (Veranda)。去到遊廊中段,就有對落地玻璃門( French doors)。我地推門而進走入屋內,見到西西里家庭既心藏地帶 – 廚房!

《我的故事3》

琴日講到我食左「 定情信物」之後,就揸車去果園。

不到5分鐘既車程,沿路矮矮樓房處處,慢慢變成農地,轉過彎路,走上斜路,本來已嶄露頭角既火山 Etna 已在兩傍果園間展露無遺。山頂仲飄住一絲長長既白煙,我仲未開口,Guido 就介紹「This is Mount Etna. 」原來係我面前係全。歐。洲。最。高。活。火。山!🌋🌋🌋

呢個🌋活火山🌋既活躍程度係 – 係2021年間,最活躍既6個月內,被噴出既火山物高度有100 尺。即係話Mount Etna 噴左既10個姚明咁高既火山物,總之長高了!😯😯😯

後來才得知西西里人對 Mount Etna  又愛又恨。
愛,愛在她既美麗、她會滋養大地、
恨,恨在她既任性、她可摧毀莊園。
上個世紀摧毀最嚴重既一次火山爆發係1669年,火山溶岩由Etna 南邊一直奔流到Catania 市既西面,歷時5個禮拜,摧毀左至少10個村莊。當年既火山岩痕跡在市內仍有跡可尋,有係馬路旁,亦可見於被復收既修道院 Monastero dei Benedittini。一座有一半係建築於火山岩石上既修道院,現時已變身為大學。

我真係懵盛盛,去左活火山區都唔知。😅

講講下,就到左一座橙色大閘。大閘一開,沿途景致又變啦!

《我的故事2》

琴日講到Guido 話28號之後個禮拜就「應該」無問題。

就係咁,我被西西里揀左去為佢既農業出一分力,為期兩個月。為左如期出行,我搵多左個 permaculture farm,襯未到 Guido 個farm 之前體驗一下。但到步後,竟然一直未能聯絡上女園主。。。

坦白講,沒有徬徨,只有無奈。亦同時,聯絡Guido ,確定我無被二次放飛機。係 Catania 城市既幾日,都有到周邊吃喝玩樂,但心情一直更期待坐火車出發去Guido 既果園。

背住一個比我還要高既80L 流浪backpack,步出火車站,見到人影無隻,心裡有點兒。。。

不過,隔左一陣就見到灰色 Renault 駛上斜路回我靠近,並停車。Guido 有禮貌地落車向我打招乎,不

在互相「How are you 」之際,我忽然感觸,仲眼濕濕咁同佢的,「I am really happy. Today is my birthday and I am finally here. 」熱淚完、大笑完,抒發完,跟住佢話,「Happy birthday! Then we have to celebrate! 」

一個屈尾拾,佢就停左係一間有圓拱形外牆,落地櫥窗,裝修簡約又不失精緻既 bar/café ,二話不說就將我帶到 gelato 櫃前話要請我食gelato con brioche !兩秒之後,一隻充滿gelato 既巨型brioche 逮到我面前!

我已經唔記得6年前既 gelato 係咩口味,但呢個 gelato con brioche 既故事就成為左我地同所有 woofers/workaway 分享既警世故事-

「係西西里,唔好輕易請人食或接受 gelato con brioche,分分鐘係定情信物呀!」😆😆😆
